Even though I have just started this book I can already see the conflicts and struggles. One of them is poverty. For example in the beginning of this book Lakshmi talks about what her village is like and the struggles to make money for her family. And by knowing this I think Lakshmi will become desperate to make money for her family and do something she thinks will benefit her family.
Another issue I found in this book so far is family. This issue is kind of in the poverty category but It also belongs in its own category. In one of the parts of the book Lakshmi talks about the season of burying children and how the children die. From diseases and starvation. Families are messed and broken when these events happen.
And the last issue I have found is sexism. In this book Lakshmi talks about how she has to treat her stepdad and what the women have to do to contribute to the family and what men have to do. Men get special treatment like massages and they are spoiled by their hard working wives.
These issues can have a big effect in the story if they get worse.
