The New Baby By Demitrius Hilerio Class 810

A new baby cousin was on the way

It scared, it scared us deep inside

My aunt told us that she is due in may

We did not know if she would be a bride

Inside of her a tiny baby slept

She would be born around a lot of love

The baby was not too hard to accept

We think she was sent to us from above.

The baby girl looked like her mother

The grin she made was huge, free of worry

Her dad and her look just like each other

When she told us those times are now blurry

We’ll help, we’ll help because we truly care

It makes my aunt happy that we’ll be there.

The Man Screaming By Demitrius Hilerio

The man looks at us in

Awe

The sunset behind him is obviously the most beautiful thing he has ever

seen

 It’s a warm sunset in the

Distance

So beautiful no one will ever look at it with

Resistance

The warm sun reflects off of the

Smooth waves

Something no one will ever see any other day.

Orange skies and beaches a great

Mixture

It looks artificial, almost like a

Picture

Almost like you can turn the background on and off like a

Fixture

The breeze is smooth and cool on your skin like you’re

Flying

So beautiful it you would want to start

Crying

The man is still in front of the sky that is

Gleaming

But he’s not looking at it because he’s too busy

Screaming.

   

    The theme is positive. The inspiration of this poem is the painting “The Scream” by Edvard Munch. The idea was to illustrate and kind of exaggerate what was in the painting with words. I also wanted to display my interpretation of the painting in my poem as well. Some literary devices I used were enjambment line breaks, rhyme, a smooth rhythm, and similes. I really wanted to describe how I felt looking at the painting and I also wanted to use similes to give each thing in the painting a deeper description.

But Edwin’s parents bought it for him.

Yeah, but if he can get it so can I.

But it has a camera and there are so many games being made for it already.

But…

Fine…..

Mother:Cool.

I’m sorry buddy, but now is not the right time.

I’m sorry, but I can’t afford it right now.

Yes they did, but it was a gift for his birthday.

Yes you can but, not right now. You’re going to have to wait.

I’m still not going to buy it until I get some more money.

This poem has a playful and childish theme to it. This poem was inspired by an argument I had as a small kid with my mother about getting a portable game console that my cousin had and it was mainly about how bad I wanted it and how simple I thought things were as a kid. I used line ending line breaks and free verse literary devices to write this poem

Starry Night by Tupac Shakur Reading Response   

  My first encounter with this poem was during English class. I first read this poem my poetry packet that was given to me. As I was turning through the pages of the packet I noticed this poem. What really drew me into reading this poem is because it was written by Tupac Shakur, which is one of my favorite rappers. So I figured the poem would be interesting. After reading the poem I noticed the deep meaning of the poem. I chose this poem as my heart poem because it read it with confusion, which encouraged me to analyze the poem and figure out how it could relate to real life.

    The message of the poem is not to try and impress others with your own work. This poem is about someone who is trying to impress other people with his/her own work and they do not appreciate his the work. I think this because in the poem it says “A Creative heart, obsessed with satisfying\this dormant and uncaring society…” what the poet means by “A Creative heart” is a person who uses creativity, which automatically indicates a person that is some sort of artist. This “Creative heart” also as mentioned in the text is obsessed with satisfying people who do not care. Later in the poem the poet hints that the “dormant and uncaring” society that this person is trying to impress actually does not appreciate this person’s work. “…u have given them\Beautiful Bouquets of Sunflowers\ but 4 u there is only contempt\and though u pour yourself into that fame\and present it proudly this world\ could not accept your masterpieces from the heart…” This shows how he gave put his hard work and effort into his “masterpieces”, but the world didn’t appreciate his work. At the end I think the “Creative heart” that the poet is referring to commits suicide. “So on that starry night u gave to us\and u took away from us\the one thing that we never acknowledged/your life.”  This shows after he had committed suicide on that night people actually started to appreciate this person’s work because it says “..u gave to us\and u took away from us…” this possibly means that though he died and his life was gone he still gave them something to acknowledge, which is his work.

   I think there is a serious tone and mood in this poem. The rhythm contributes to this mood because the poem has a slow rhythm and it’s told like a story. For example one part is explaining the story behind the “creative heart” that the poet is referring to and then the next part after the line break is explaining how much effort he put into his work just for others and to satisfy them, though they didn’t care. Then after that the last part of the poem is explaining how the main character has taken their life away, but in a way gave it to them. This is written like a serious story. Another example of this is that the poet uses words that are somewhat sophisticated to really emphasize serious and important parts in the poem. One example from the poem is “Bountiful Bouquets of Sunflowers\but 4 u there is only contempt.” Words and phrases like Bountiful Bouquets of Sunflowers and contempt emphasize what the main character in the poem is struggling with and what the main conflict is in the poem. This contributes to the poem’s serious tone and mood.

     Before reading this poem I thought, since Tupac is a rapper that usually is rapping about the hardships and gangs in California. I thought maybe his poem would be about the same topics. To my surprise this poem taught me some lessons and affected me in both a negative and positive way. This poem affects me in a both positive and negative way. This poem teaches me not let other people’s opinions of my hard work to bother me and affect me negatively. This poem can also teach how harsh people can be in the world towards thing that you’ve put a lot of effort and time into. When reading the poem it does inspire me to go and actually write more serious poems that could relate to real world issues and relatable/common issues. This poem also inspires me to treat other people’s work with respect and also to appreciate the work that they’re presenting to me.
